This series of films were created by villagers in Kalbeo and Kunkua villages, near Bolgatanga in northern Ghana. InsightShare trained staff from various local NGOs and CBOs in Participatory Video facilitation as part of 3-week capacity building programme with Compas Network for Endogenous Development. Trainees facilitated Participatory Video processes with groups from both villages which culminated in the creation of a series of short videos made by women and farmer groups. The videos were edited and translated by the trainees as part of the training programme.
Great enthusiasm was generated in the villages and the local participants quickly became engaged in documenting their experiences, local knowledge and innovations. A return visit in 2008 confirmed that both communities continue to utilise the equipment provided to them and the skills they learned to document their cultural heritage (filming fetish festivals etc.) and preserve valuable knowledge for future generations.
The project is facilitated by InsightShare. InsightShare uses Participatory Video as a tool for individuals and groups to grow in self-confidence and trust, and to build skills to act for change. Our Participatory Video methods value local knowledge, build bridges between communities and decision-makers, and enable people to develop greater control over the decisions affecting their lives.
